Here Comes Autumn, Her Skirts A-Twirl

Claude Monet, "Autumn at Argenteuil"

Autumn kicks off this week–by some calculations it begins Friday–so here’s a poem by my favorite poet of light verse. Enjoy.

Kind of a Mini-Ode to Autumn

By Scott Bates

Here she comes again
That beautiful girl
In her new fall wardrobe
With her skirts a-twirl

With her paisley meadows
And her tweedy trees
And her hazy perfume
That makes me sneeze

But she makes an
Exasperating date
She runs hot and cold
She’s always late

And just when I’m hoping
That maybe she’ll stay
She starts getting restless
Until one day

To a tropical island
Off she goes
Leaving me to pick
Up all her clothes.
