Move with the Wind, Sleep under the Snow

Robert Emmett Owen, "Two Snow Covered Pines"

In just over a week, I will be with my parents in Sewanee, Tennessee picking out a Christmas tree. They have a very high living room and, for years, we would find trees some 12 or 15 feet. In recent years our trees have become much more modest so that we no longer need a ladder to hang the decorations.

Here’s a poem by my ecological father that has me wondering whether we should be cutting down even small trees. Then again, we help out a local farmer, who always plants more, and it’s an important affirmation of life in a dark season. Let the poem usher you into the holiday spirit if you’re not there already.

Interview with a Tree

By Scott Bates

Q: So how do you feel
being left behind

A: I’m pining away
No I’m kidding I
have roots in this place
but it’s chilly at dawn
with the rest of them gone
and frankly between us
it’s lonesome as hell

Q: So what will you do

A: Well there’s plenty of space
I’ll move with the wind
sleep under the snow
feel the sun on my face
watch the spring come in

Q: What about a warm house
stars and ornaments say
what about tinsel
and getting lit up
on Christmas Eve
presents and candy
and kids all about

A: And getting thrown
out a week later No
thanks Besides
there are lots of stars here
moonlight and snowflakes
friends who drop in
I still have some friends

Q: Friends

A: Old friends of mine
I give cones to Pine
Siskins and a place to stay
Grackles and Goldfinches
Robins and Crows
a few Cedar Waxwings
a one-legged Jay
sometimes a Sparrow Hawk
sits on my head
Foxes go by

Q: Our time’s running out
Would you say a last word
for our listeners please

A: Sure Organize!
and rescue the trees
